Commissions

1 January, 2010 – 7:44 pm

Commissioning a work of art is very straightforward, I can show you images of commissions that I have carried out in the past which may give you some ideas, or you may have a totally unique idea that you would like carved in stone.

This can be a table top cut from slate a sculpture to serve as a feature in your home or garden or some lettering.

I use various stones to create my carvings; Red Sandstone from the Forest of Dean, Slate from Delabole in North Cornwall. I am planning on stocking Welsh Slate as well, Tetbury Limestone from Veizeys Quarry, Various other Cotwold Limestone and Portland Limestone from Dorset.

I cut the letters by hand using various chisels. I have a large selection of lettering styles and can create new fonts to your specifications. ‘Wildwood’ in my gallery was designed for one of my customers.

I can carve house name, numbers, poems, phrases that are pertinent to you. The prices depend on the size of the letters, number of characters and the finish-this can be left as it is cut, painted in a variety of colours or gilded using 23 and 3/4 gold leaf. I also carve memorial stones for the dearly departed. I don’t put photos of these on my website but would be more than happy to discuss this in person and show you some examples.

As a traditionally trained stonemason, I can undertake conservation and restoration work, cleaning statues, repointing-using lime mortars and simple stonemasonry projects.

Recent news.

22 December, 2009 – 8:55 pm

I apologise for not adding any new material to my website, but as you can imagine I have been a little pre-occupied with the big move. I am re-locating to a new craft centre. Please check out my other post for more details and a map.

I have been working on several new projects. The one that is really exciting is my use of slate in creating water movement. this is an on-going project and will involve a series of carvings. for some examples have a look at my gallery and a dedicated post.

I have been dying to carve another large scale figure and with the move comes a bigger workshop, therefore I have the stone lined up and will be creating what will hopefully be another beauty. As some of you may be aware, I generally work straight from my head, but with the larger scale works, I often make a small clay model-a Maquette. This enables me to cement  the idea in my head, but generally this is not what I work from once I get started.

I will also be able to develop my paintings and drawings as I have a dedicated space for what I call clean work.

This move promises to be one of great development and the possibilities are endless!!!

My Gallery and Sculpture for sale

3 November, 2009 – 6:20 pm

I have had a reshuffle of my gallery. In order to make it easier for you all to view my work. I have added whether the sculpture is a commission, still available to buy-with the price or whether it has been sold.

I have placed the carvings and lettering in blocks. The lettering is all towards the end, and my carvings are at the start with images of other work  in between .

Some of my carvings are commissions, all available sculptures are for sale. These sculptures vary in price, depending on the size, type of stone, how long they have taken me.

All my Sculptures are for sale and they vary from £200 upwards, these prices are for the larger figurative sculptures, the Green Men, Gargoyles and Grotesques.

The Bird Baths and water features range from £45 for a simple rockery birdbath to £2500 for an elaborate decorative birdbath.

I do make smaller sculpture and gifts for sale and the prices range from £2.75 for a coaster, tealight holders-from £10, bowls in various shapes and sizes, ranging from £35.00 upwards, these can all be personalised.

Lettering is priced per letter, type of finish, size and stone type.

Please get in touch if you would like a quote on some carving.

New Sculptures

12 October, 2009 – 4:12 pm

Well the lack of commissions has an up-side, I am able to work through some of my ideas.

You may have seen my sculpture ‘July’ I am currently working along the theme of water and movement. My latest sculpture again using Delabole slate and Tetbury limestone features a sphere of limestone with the ripples carved in the slate-as though the sphere is rolling through a puddle causing bow waves.

The next one along this train of thought will incorporate stainless steel, limestone and slate.

I will post pictures as I work on them.

House Names and Numbers

11 October, 2009 – 9:00 pm

Why not add something specially hand carved to your house.

A new name plate or number doesn’t have to be expensive, for as little as £20 you could have a bespoke number carved for your house.

Obviously hand carved stone house names tend to be a little more expensive, but bear in mind the impact that these have on the look of your property. It is something that you as the customer have a role in the design of.  They are long lasting-I have just restored a 150yr old date stone-still clear after all this time!!

I appreciate that we are not here for 150yrs, but it is a legacy for the next generation.

The prices are charged per letter or number and can be carved in a variety of styles. These can be finished with a range of colours, or go that little bit further and have the carved figures gilded with 23 and 3/4 gold leaf.

The Forest of Dean Sandstone and Delabole Slate don’t need to be painted or gilded to stand out-it is entirely up to you!

The limestone that I use is Tetbury from Veizeys Quarry, or Portland Limestone from Dorset. Although these generally need a colour in the letters or numbers in order to stand out.

For examples of hand carved house names and numbers please visit my gallery, if you require a quote, please email me or just give me a ring.
