Happy New Year

3 January, 2018 – 11:00 am

I hope that you are all fully rested and raring to go for 2018.

I have a busy year coming up, lots of new and exciting ventures and some old favourites.

In January my partner and I are moving home. Don’t worry my business will remain unaffected and I will benefit both mentally and physically from the move because I will be closer to my workshop. Watch this space for some exciting new sculptures.

I have 3 talks booked in so far, if you would like to find out more please click here

I am hoping to join a crafters shop in Wotton Under Edge, not only will you be able to purchase some of my smaller carvings from there but once a month I will be in the shop. This is an exciting new venture and I look forward to meeting new people.

Obviously I will be running my stone carving activities throughout the School holidays, I am just working out my February dates and will be introducing a half hour session as well as the existing 20 min and 1 hour sessions.

I will be running my 2 day stone carving courses for information please click here

On the August Bank holiday weekend I will be holding my Stone Carving Festival, this will coincide with the relaunch of The Llanthony Secunda Priory.

All in all a busy year so I hope that you will pay me a visit at my workshop, if you have any ideas that you would like to discuss for a commission then please get in touch.

Seashell carving progress update

28 December, 2017 – 10:00 am

So I have been busy working on this carving and developing the shapes, here are the next set of photos.

This piece will not be carved to the bottom to make it look like it is on a rock and to also preserve some of the historic tooling on this piece of Painswick limestone.

Seashell sculpture

25 December, 2017 – 10:00 am

I am developing my next sculpture in my series of Seashell carvings. I know it seems like it takes me a long time to get to the next carving but I have commissions that I must fulfil in order to give me the opportunity to carve the things that I love. And, yes it does take me a long time as well, I’m hand carving rock.

Here are the first photos from my latest offering.

As you may remember from the broken seashell that I am drawing I am using the shapes that capture my imagination not the actual shape but that is beautiful as well. I will be carving some more literal seashell sculptures in the future.

Bacchus Green Man carving

21 December, 2017 – 10:22 am

What a busy few months I have had. Alongside my commissions for hand carved house signs I have been working on my carvings.

This one which I have been working on since August is the Bacchus Green Man carving. I am using an old piece of  Portland limestone that I bought from a retiring stonemason. It has some interesting features in the stone which is forcing me to be more creative in my method of carving. One end of the stone is part of the roach bed layer. It is interesting as it has fossilised seashells but also some that are just spiral shaped voids where a creature once was. This is an excellent way of learning the natural differences in various stone that I carve.

The other end of the stone is called basebed so is geologically older and also much denser and more consistent, therefore easier to carve. These different beds in the stone are shown in the photos.

As you can see I am starting to undercut the leaves and grapes so I am gradually getting closer to the finish but I estimate another 150-200 hrs carving.
