Commissions

9 October, 2011 – 10:32 am

I decided to move into the workshop next to the one I was in. This will make me more visible at Taurus Crafts!

However it has meant that I have had to put all my commissions on hold for a few days!
Once I have got resettled I will be able to crack on and make up the time!

At the moment I am working on a pair of Acorns in cups and an Acorn cup on it’s own.
I am carving Forest of Dean Sandstone, which is very hard, but the finish will be lovely-I will post photos as soon as they are complete!

I hope you will be able to come and visit my new look workshop which has a more obvious shop area and working area!

Carving a Green Man

26 September, 2011 – 2:47 pm

Well Here is a short post on carving a simple Green man.

I have used my favourite stone, Tetbury limestone from Veizeys Quarry.

I cut it into an octagon and then drew on the design!

As you can see from the photos, I have gone all around the outside of the leaves and then cut down, cut the depth for the eyes and then repeated the process untill I can start to add finesse to the forms!

This took about 6hrs, it is 7.5×7.5×3 inches and could be mounted onto or built into a wall. It costs £125.

Arty, a Tetbury Limestone carving.

19 September, 2011 – 3:30 pm

With this carving I was trying to move away from the stereotypical Green Man-I hope you like him!

So with the cheeky face, rams horns and an ivy beard, I think he a rather handsome chap and would make an excellant edition to your garden!

He took about 30hrs and costs £450.

Carving a Snail Shell

12 September, 2011 – 3:30 pm

So I started off with a rectangular block of Tetbury limestone. Once I had set out the geometry of this spiral I made a template and applied it to both sides of the stone.

Once carved using a series of chamfers, the stone starts to look like a large comma!!

It was time to re-apply the template to be able to carve the spiral, (look for Bernoulli/Descartes if you wish to know the geometry).

As you can see I am carving down to create the shape, this is all done by eye and touch!

Once I have the required shape, I used a series of different Bouchard hammers to texture the stone-these hammers are excellant for evening out a surface, they look like meat tenderisers!!

I used this finish as the stone was so hard and shelly it would have been incredibly difficult to sand and polish!

This took about 30 hrs and costs £400.
