A new War Memorial

Last October I was asked to design a new War Memorial for Mitcheldean and Abenhall in the Forest of Dean. In june I was finally able to submit my drawings for a double sided stone carving.

I will be using Forest of Dean sandstone, One side commemorating the first World War will feature a half life size relief carving of a member of this community who served in the great war, and the names of the fallen soldiers. On the other side there will be a half life size carving of a second World war soldier and the names of the soldiers who gave their lives. I am hoping that the council will be able to provide me with an image of someone from the community that I can carve. There will be a dedication around the bottom all the way around and the line from the poem will appear on both sides at the top.

The piece of stone will be 6ft out of the ground, 4ft wide and 9 inches thick. There will also be poppies carved around the bottom of the stone. It will be in Cross Garden in Mitcheldean.

Have a go at stonecarving

Have a go at stone carving is on today (5th August) in my studio from 10.30 – 12.30 and 13.45 – 16.30. It costs just £15 and you get to carve a roughly 4 inch square piece of limestone from Tetbury, which you can take home with you.

I start you off by helping you carve your initial on one side, this is also your practice side then we turn it over and you carve a design of your choice on the other side. I give you as much or as little help as you need as everyone’s ability is different.

Last week I had an angel, a heart, a horseshoe and a beautiful tropical fish among other ideas carved.

After today due to my work schedule my next activity day isn’t until the 29th August.

I also offer 1 hr slots or 2 day carving classes which are bookable at your leisure

SALE 2019

I am having a sale to make space for my new carvings. I am also taking part in an exhibition next month and I need to cover some costs associated with this.

The exhibition is The celebration of Craftsmanship and design in Cheltenham. This takes place from the 17th to the 26th August. There is an exhibitors fee and the cost of new pieces of stone for my new sculptures. I would also like to get some brochures printed that people can take away with them.

There is the opportunity to buy my sculptures at this event and hopefully I will make a sale or pique someone’s interest enough to commission me to carve something for them but until this time I need to raise money to pay for things in advance.

These carvings which I have designed and hand carved out of the finest limestone have been selected as it is time that they found a new home to make space for my new carvings.

This Green man is hand-carved out of Portland limestone, he is ornamented with acorns for his beard and eyes with Oak leaves creating the rest of his face. He is massively reduced from £1200 to £650. He is 13.5 x 12.5 x 3 inches with a base measuring 15.75 x 12 x 2 inches, secured with stainless steel dowels, he could be built into a wall but his plinth makes him suitable for freestanding in your home or garden.

Here’s my beautiful Beastie, inspired by a Chinese Dragon dog with his Mandarin style beard. He is reduced from £950 to £500 and is hand-carved out of a piece of Tetbury limestone measuring 7 x 7 x 7 x 12 inches. He would work brilliantly outside but I’d have him guarding one of my rooms.

My cheeky Grotesque is hand-carved out of a 5 x 7 x 8 inch piece of Tetbury limestone. He is reduced from £385 to £200. He would look great in your home and would make you smile every time you looked at him but would look just as good nestled amongst some flowers in you garden.

Recent sculptures

I have been working on a series of new sculptures for the Celebration of Craftsmanship and Design. I am displaying 8 sculptures which will be available to buy at this exhibition in Cheltenham. It takes place from the 17th to the 26th August at the Thirlestaine Gallery on Bath Road.

They are in the most part inspired by my visit to the Ice Age exhibition that I saw 5 yrs ago but as my ideas develop they are taking on a fern shape as a result of some ideas I was drawing for a potential garden sculpture.

I find damaged seashells fascinating as I can see the spiral and curves inside.

I have a lengthy commission list, so as well as these new sculptures I am carving my way through a diverse selection of orders. The Fern and the Owl are both commissions, as well as some house signs and carved words.

This week I will be finishing my family group carving and completing some more letter carving commissions.

Next on my banker, there will be a piece for a broken seashell roughly 8 x 8 x 12 and my Mother’s love sculpture which will stand 28 inches high.

Been a bit busy

Sorry that I haven’t posted for a while, I am rather busy carving 5 new pieces for the Celebration of Craftsmanship and Design that I am exhibiting in from the 17th to the 26th of August. I will be exhibiting 8 pieces in total.

My sculptures will be my broken seashell series and my mother and child series, all will be available to buy from the show.

I am also working through my lengthy commission list and if you are thinking about commissioning something as  a Christmas present please don’t leave it too late as I currently have a 6mth waiting list.
