Lifting the stone

24 July, 2020 – 9:38 pm

Today was the day, the stone was lifted upright by a dedicated sculpture moving team. The stone weighs just over 3.5 tonnes so the 5t lifting equipment was just what was needed. With a bit of adjustment and re-positioning of the stone the lifting could commence.

Between Damon and Max the stone was lifted and stood up, once the gantry crane had been re-positioned for the last time I obviously had to have a go at lifting the 3.5t block off the ground before it was lowered into it’s resting place and levelled ready for me to start drawing the 1st World War details tomorrow (Saturday)

Lifting Equipment

22 July, 2020 – 10:56 am

Reid Lifting are generously lending me the equipment to stand the stone up for the war memorial carving.

They came along yesterday to erect the 5 tonne capable gantry crane, here are a few photos.

The stone is going to be stood up on Friday evening and I will be starting the drawing of the design onto the stone on Saturday.

Obviously I welcome you to come and watch but I will be answering questions on hourly breaks. Or you can get in touch and send questions via my contactme page.

War Memorial

18 July, 2020 – 11:13 am

Great news, the equipment I need for lifting the stone is being put up on Tuesday. The stone will be lifted upright at the end of the week. This means that I will be making a start on drawing the design out next weekend.

Reid Lifting are based in Chepstow, they have been so generous in lending me the equipment and when it transpired that the stone need a 5t crane they were happy to swap it over. Unfortunately we went into lockdown before this could take place. I am eager to get started on the carving as I am now very behind. Nobody could have foreseen the impact this virus would have and I am so grateful to be finally almost there.

I have started to open to one person or bubble (no more that 3 people). This will be monitored and if the infection rate starts to go back up I may return to appointment only.

I have professional 3 ply masks and hand sanitiser available for you to use. No one will be allowed in without a mask.

Thank you for your understanding at this time, let’s keep everyone safe.

Sculpture during Lock-down

26 June, 2020 – 11:19 am

This is where I am at the moment with my carving. There is still about 50 hours work as I am getting to the fiddly bits. The hand that is by the side of her head will be tricky but I have turned it slightly so that it is against her hair and won’t be as vulnerable.

Unfortunately there is a flaw though the stone, some calcite but it’s not a complete vein and there are voids in her knee so this could never be an outdoor piece or at least she would have to come in during winter.

Welcome back.

14 June, 2020 – 7:36 pm

I am open by appointment only from the 15th June, I have everyone’s safety in mind but following the guidelines I hope to be open properly in July.

I have cleaned and tidied my workshop and shop as well as installing a perspex screen in an effort to make keeping 2 metres apart comfortable and easy.

I have hand sanitiser available and because you will make an appointment either to discuss a commission where I can have designs and the stone ready for you or to have a look at what I have available to buy off my shelves, I can have everything ready for you without compromising our safety.
Please could you wear a mask in my studio, I will have some available if you forget yours or don’t have one.
