Just a quick update.

1 February, 2021 – 4:10 pm
It is very difficult to develop a flow when most of what I need is at my workshop, the tools I’m using at the moment are inside and my stone is in my shed, golly it’s cold out there. So I have been generating some more commissions by contacting people and updating my facebook page with photos of house numbers…

These are some examples that I have outside my workshop.

I have spent today working on my computer and while it hasn’t all been work, I am not sure where it’s has gone. I have some new commissions and a rather large memorial that I have designed to get one with once I can return to my studio, as well as the all important and constantly on my mind War memorial for Mitcheldean and Abenhall.
I have some bookends to finish and hope to get on with those tomorrow and then a wedding present to carve.
I am planning a trip to my studio later to get some more equipment and packaging for posting house numbers.
I have some lovely pieces of stone suitable for all types of carving, whether it’s words, numbers or a statement piece for your home or garden so please don’t be afraid to get in touch if you have an idea.

I hope you are all staying safe and not going too stir crazy,

Take care everyone, Carrie.

Drawing and designing.

18 January, 2021 – 1:19 pm
During this time of quiet, I am finding that my mind has started to free up from the busy world of running my own business and being on the go all the time.
My ideas come from my imagination but are drawn out of my interest in Medieval history, with a natural progression to Art Nouveau and Pre-Raphaelite paintings and sculptures.
Most of my sculpture degree focused on portrait and figurative sculpture from live models, be it painting and drawing or sculpted directly into clay so it is only natural that I would find my comfort zone in this subject matter.
Here are my two latest sketches for some new carvings.
I will be using French limestone as it has a lovely fine texture so is perfectly suited for fine detail as you can see in my Angel sculpture.

Some of my carvings available to buy.

16 January, 2021 – 2:46 pm

During this lockdown obviously my shop is closed but here are a few things that I have available to buy from my shop.

My clocks are designed and hand carved out of a variety of stones. Cumbrian slate has a slightly blue/green hue whereas the Welsh slate is blue/black or heather coloured, My Cumbrian sandstone comes from St Bees and the Portland limestone from Dorset is either base bed which has less fossilised shell or Roach bed which has alot of fossils or voids where fossils didn’t form.

My hand carved calligraphy is designed by me and drawn directly onto the stone so that it works with the shape of the stone. I choose the paint or gold leaf finish depending on what I think will look right.

Leaves, flowers and the Green Man provide me with an endless source of inspiration. I have a wide selection of bookends but is one of my simplest pair, he natural beauty of the calcite and fossils being the only decoration that they need.

This selection of sculptures were inspired by the fluidity of nature and the simplicity of Ice-Age sculpture. Something that I have been exploring for a few years now.

I am happy to discuss commissions for most types of stone carving, sculpture and letter cutting

Working from home.

11 January, 2021 – 10:27 am

During the last Summer I was able to work in my garden thanks to the lovely warm and dry weather that we had.

My boyfriend and I spent a day clearing a very rundown shed in the garden so if the weather turned so I still had a place to work. I didn’t finish kitting it out though as I didn’t need it…until now.
I spent a day last week collecting what I would need for my next 3 commissions and organising the space so I could work, as you can see I now have a space that allows me to work from home.

The shed had a very uneven dirt floor and evidence of rats everywhere. As well as nasty dirty rotten shelves covered in rat droppings. The shelf brackets were screwed on with flat head screws that stripped when we tried to undo them so we resorted to using my dremmel to cut them off.
I didn’t think to take before shots as I had no idea that I would be writing about this now as a point of interest.
I tried to level it as best as I could and using some bricks that I found piled up under an overgrown dumping ground at the end of the garden (which I had started to tidy) I laid a floor, I hoped in doing so it would stop the rats.
I had a little bit of white paint so I watered it down to make it go further (as paint wasn’t something that we could readily buy in the Summer) to paint the wooden walls and some green paint that I had knocking around leftover from something.

Our living room flooded before Christmas so I used the carpet and underlay that was ruined to put down on the bricks and make a draft excluder around the bottom of the shed…there are quite alot of gaps.
The lighting is great in there now thanks to a friend giving me some halogen site lights with bonus extra warmth and I have hung an old tent outer shell up at the door as there are alot of gaps in the door too.
I partially dismantled the easel that Ed and I constructed in the Summer and it is now fixed to the brick wall that the shed is built against.

I have re-used the brackets to put some shelves up and screws for hanging saws and straight edges and finally my work bench I brought home last Summer is in there along with a workmate for extra bench space.
I am going to be toasty warm in there with my small halogen heater that has been with me for 10 years.

I am looking forward to carving my next house sign that has an Oak Tree motif.

I have decided that I will be working from home until it is safe to do otherwise. The war memorial will have to take a back seat for now as working from my studio isn’t practical or safe, although the site is closed to the public there are residents that live there and other on-site workers.
I will be visiting my studio once a week to bring in commissions for finishing and collecting the next batch and the necessary stone.

I wish you all good health and I look forward to seeing you in the future.

Update on the new war memorial.

29 December, 2020 – 10:28 am

I have managed to spend a couple of days working on the 1st world war soldier but as you can imagine it was quite busy at Taurus Crafts. I am looking forward to getting back on with the carving in January.

I have put some short videos on my YouTube channel it shows some of the methods and chisels that I have been using. At this stage there isn’t any detailed work going on as I am roughing out the outlines to make sure that I have enough stone to create the right levels and detail.

I sculpted a portrait of George Hyett in clay from a photo taken over 100 years ago and I am using a photo of a 1st world war soldier to make sure I have all the details right.
